Why Does Electric Car Battery Life Expectancy Matter?

Electric car battery life expectancy currently sits at around 10 to 20 years. Morton drivers want their EV batteries to last for as long as possible, and these batteries have great warranty coverage. EV batteries also have to be robust and long-lasting enough to compete with gas-powered vehicles.

While electric car battery life expectancy is great, these batteries are also very expensive, costing between $5,000 to $15,000 to replace. But if we look at the numbers, you’ll notice that car batteries have also decreased over the past decade, and they’re only expected to keep dropping as technologies continue to improve thanks to the huge interest in EVs.

Most manufacturers also have eight to ten years of battery warranty coverage, and eight years or 100,000 miles is the minimum amount of EV battery warranty coverage in the U.S.

Maximizing Your Electric Car’s Battery Life

How long do electric car batteries last when maintained properly? You’ll get many, many years out of your EV battery when it’s maintained. How you drive and where you park your EV will affect your EV’s battery life:

  1. Don’t charge your vehicle every night, and try to keep your vehicle somewhere between 20%–80% battery life, generally.
  2. You may know that cold is bad is batteries, but extreme heat can reduce a battery’s total capacity as well. Try to store your EV in a garage whenever possible, especially one that’s climate controlled.
  3. Charge up more slowly whenever possible and don’t always rely on DC Fast Charging Stations. Overusing them can degrade your battery over time.
  4. Extreme driving changes aren’t great for your battery. Try to always maintain a consistent speed within your speed limit and drive normally.
