How Long Does an Oil Change Take When You Do It Yourself?

As with anything else, the more experience you gain at doing something, the less time it takes to do it. So, how long should an oil change take when you do it yourself? The first time you do it may very well take around an hour. But subsequent times may take as little as half an hour or even less. However, that doesn’t count cleaning up, changing in and out of dirty clothes, and disposing of the dirty oil. Here’s a list of the items you’ll need if you take this on yourself:

  • Replacement oil
  • Oil filter
  • Filter gasket
  • Oil pan
  • Oil filter wrench
  • Wrench or socket (with socket wrench) that fits your drain plug
  • Funnel
  • Rags
  • Floor jack
  • Jack stands
  • Wheel blocks
